The winning track! Written for the fourth and final round of Spintunes 6, the challenge was to write a protest song about the same topic you picked in round three. My round three song had been a sort of anti-deployment war protest (Don't Send Them Away) so here I continued to focus on the effect on the home front. My daughter Sierra helped with some crucial vocals (at one point at had considered having the entire song from the point of view of the wife or something, but getting another family voice in the song was there almost from conception. In the end I came in first and was finally a Spintunes champ!
lyrics
Who's it gonna be next time
You want to send someone off to die
And even those that come back,
have a different look in their eye
Then some families fall apart
And some keep a gun by their bed
And every once in awhile think about
Holding it up to their head
But they're someone's father
Someone's mother
Someone's sister
Someone's brother
Someone's daughter
Someone's son
But if you send them away
They won't be for long
Will it be some poor kid
Just trying to pay for school
Or a kid who saw the movies
And he thought the guns we're cool
Will it be a senator's son
A president's daughter
Or the faceless masses
Useless fodder
Going off to battles they didn't choose
Are they fighting me?
Are they dying for you?
Someone's father
Someone's mother
Someone's sister
Someone's brother
Someone's daughter
Someone's son
But if you send them away
They won't be for long
You wouldn't have to send no one next time
If there was no next time at all
Keep the mothers and the fathers
Posting their pictures on the wall
All the laughter, all the tears
All the christmases
All the years
Moments captured - living lives
Instead off to war, to kill and die
Because they're someone's father
Someone's mother
Someone's sister
Someone's brother
Someone's daughter
Someone's son
But if you send them away
They won't be for long
